**Nomenclature** is a system of names or terms, or the rules for forming these terms in a particular field of arts or sciences. In this article, we mean terms about **Hyperbola**, <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>projects/distributions</color> and <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>policies</color> from which **Hyperbola** is based on.

The official name of this <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>project/distribution</color>. It is commonly used as <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>shorthand</color> for its modified versions of the **GNU** operating system.

==== HyperbolaBSD™ ====

**HyperbolaBSD™** is the proper name of the <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>operating system under development</color> by **Hyperbola**. **HyperbolaBSD** is an independent, fully free (as in [[https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw|freedom]]) **BSD-descended operating system**, based on **Unix modular design**((Modular design, or modularity in design, is a design principle that subdivides a system into smaller parts called modules (such as modular process skids), which can be independently created, modified, replaced, or exchanged with other modules or between different systems.)) and **minimalism**((In computing, minimalism refers to the application of minimalist philosophies and principles in the design and use of hardware and software. Minimalism, in this sense, means designing systems that use the least hardware and software resources possible.)). It upholds the principles of **Keep It Simple, Stupid (KISS)**((Design principle which states that designs and/or systems should be as simple as possible.)) and **Don't Repeat Yourself (DRY)**((Principle of software development aimed at reducing repetition of software patterns, replacing it with abstractions or using data normalization to avoid redundancy.)). By **free software**, we mean that the user controls the software; it does not control the user. **HyperbolaBSD** is a **Long-Term Support (LTS)**((Product lifecycle management policy in which a stable release of computer software is maintained for a longer period of time than the standard edition.)) operating system, released under [[https://www.gnu.org/licenses/copyleft.html|copyleft licenses]] and [[https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.en.html#GPLCompatibleLicenses|licenses compatible with the GNU GPL]].

**HyperbolaBSD** uses the **hyperman** utility for <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>package management</color>, **runit** as its <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>default init system</color>, and **musl** as its <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>default C standard library</color>. Its kernel is called **HyperBK**.

The proper name of the <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>GNU operating system</color> version distributed by **Hyperbola**. It is a <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>modified version</color> of the **GNU** operating system along with other free software and uses "**Linux-libre**" as its kernel (<color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>a fully-free-as-in-freedom fork</color> of **Linux** that is maintained under official **GNU** auspices).

The proper name of the <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>GNU operating system</color> version distributed by **Arch**. It is a <color #620BB9/#EEDDFF>modified version</color> of the **GNU** operating system along with other free software and uses "**Linux**" as its kernel.
